I like a good challenge.
My last 2 board game purchases have been Twilight Struggle and Terra Mystica.
Both of these are in my opinion difficult games to learn and in turn, to teach to others.
Now once I've played a few games of each they don't seem so bad, just a lot of mechanics working together to form the overall game.
Just curious what the most difficult games you have ever played or had to learn have been?
Maybe just games that have rules that are so convoluted that you can't imagine how they made it through play testing.
My guess is that there are a couple war games out there that make Twilight Struggle and Terra Mystica look like Tic-Tac-Toe.
For me, Mage Knight was the most difficult to learn and continues to be a struggle each time I play it.
It's an amazing game, but the combat system is crazy hard to master and requires constant use of the instruction manual throughout the game.
It is difficult to learn.
Ricky Royals YouTube most difficult board game on it were a great resource to learn the game.
He's an awesome teacher and had a great channel.
The complexity comes from the variety of location and enemy types, plus the difficulty of trying to do so many things in a turn with just a few cards.
So it's incredibly difficult to master, but to just learn to the point where you can play, looking up special cases as they come up?
Not as hard as it might seem based on the tiny print in the rulebook.
In my experience Netrunner is harder to learn just because most difficult board game the number of unusual concepts, the special lingo for common things "HQ" instead of "hand"and the subtlety of the timing rules.
It's a struggle to teach.
Learning just takes a few hours reading and re-reading the rules.
Time consuming, but not too difficult.
In my opinion, at least.
Well Mage Knight and Twilight Imperium are some of the heaviest games that get thrown around frequently.
Actually Twilight Imperium's rules are written really really well.
The instruction booklet builds off itself in a really straight forward way and there are check this out good player written summaries on Boardgamegeek.
We had a pretty pain free time with this with some members that usually struggle with new rule sets.
Agree, TI is really deep, but very elegant and a lot less intimidating than it seems.
Pretty much, after you've read the instructions, it will be much easier to teach the game to someone new than it is to read and learn it the first time.
I just played for the first time this past week and it wasn't as intimidating as it appears.
The rules are well done and all the mechanisms and the flow of the game make sense.
It is very deep but not very complex.
All of these pale in comparison to just about any Phil Eklund game.
High Frontier is so worth it to learn though.
That being said - yeah mage knight can be a bear.
Virgin Queen with over 80 pages in rules and scenarios.
Hands down the most difficult game I've ever had to learn, then teach to a group of people.
The rules even give you a script to follow to teach others how to play.

Fire in the Lake is tough because while the game itself is rather balanced, it's an asymmetric game; I'm not talking unique like in Terra Mystica where it's just their special powers, I'm talking "each action you can do a turn is different than what the other three groups can do free printable life board turn, plus your victory conditions and how thats calculated are all different.

Otherwise, the game I never bought even though I love playing it: 7 Wonders.
Just such a long explanation of a lot of cards with no way for someone to get it without playing a bunch of hands.
Very long in comparison to its length.
And, even for people who've played 18xx games before: 1862.
There are a lot of new rules, a new way to start companies and three different trains types.
Great game though but not for the faint of heart.
I found I cannot teach that while playing another game which is what was happening while we crowded a games cafe : : : Pretty hard to imagine Carcassone being difficult to teach.
Place a tile on a legal spot visuals make it easy to see which tiles fitplace worker on tile, win points.
Assuming no expansions to clog it up.
Sure there's complexity beyond that, but turn-by-turn mechanics are dead simple and most difficult board game game or two of almost anything are a learning experience anyway.

Thus making it seem like each type of placement is much more complicated than it is.
I've had a consistently great experience using the tutorial missions in the rulebook.
They start off pretty easy and introduce just enough new concepts each mission that it's not overwhelming.
I've also found it works okay to start with real missions if there is only one new player.
Just watching one playthrough and resolution with some explanation is enough to catch on.
In the same vein, Space Cadets.
With all the minigames, people say, "Let's just play!
We'll figure it out.
How hard can it be?

Ghost Stories is always lauded as one of the hardest co-ops, but it's not that hard either at novice difficulty once you know the strategy. The problem being that it is utterly unforgiving of poor strategy (you WILL lose if you make non-optimal choices) where Spirit Island is extremely forgiving of mistakes at lower difficulty.

Most Difficult to Learn: Race for the Galaxy this was taught to me very early in my boardgame life and there were too many symbols and it took the person about an hour to demo/teach it to us. Still didn't understand it in the end. Most Difficult to Teach: C02 for some reason this game was really hard to wrap my head around. Maybe because it was.

Ghost Stories is always lauded as one of the hardest co-ops, but it's not that hard either at novice difficulty once you know the strategy. The problem being that it is utterly unforgiving of poor strategy (you WILL lose if you make non-optimal choices) where Spirit Island is extremely forgiving of mistakes at lower difficulty.

My last 2 board game purchases have been Twilight Struggle and Terra Mystica.
Both of these are in my opinion difficult games to learn and in turn, to teach to others.
Now once I've played a few games of each they don't seem so bad, just a lot of mechanics working together to form the overall game.
Just curious what the most difficult games you have ever played or had to learn have been?
Maybe just games that have rules that are so convoluted that you can't imagine how they made it through play testing.
My guess is that there are a couple war games out there that make Twilight Struggle and Terra Mystica look like Tic-Tac-Toe.
For me, Mage Knight was the most difficult to learn and continues to be a struggle each time I play it.
It's an amazing game, but the combat system is crazy hard to master and requires constant use of the instruction manual throughout the game.
It is difficult to learn.

He's an awesome teacher and had a great channel.

We had a pretty pain free time with this with some members that usually struggle with new rule sets.
Agree, TI is really deep, but very elegant and a lot less intimidating than it seems.
Pretty much, after you've read the instructions, it will be much easier to teach the game to someone new than most difficult board game is to read and learn it the first time.
I just played for the first time this past week and it wasn't as intimidating as it appears.
The rules are well done and all the mechanisms and the flow of the any fun wii balance board games happens make sense.
It is very deep but not very complex.
All of these pale in comparison to just about any Phil Eklund game.
High Frontier is so worth it to learn though.
That being said - yeah mage knight can be a bear.
Virgin Queen with over 80 pages in rules and scenarios.
Hands down the most difficult game I've ever had to learn, then teach to a group of people.
The rules even give you a script to follow to teach others how to play.

Fire in the Lake is tough because while the game itself is rather balanced, it's an asymmetric game; I'm not talking unique like in Terra Mystica where it's just their special powers, I'm talking "each action you can do a turn is different than what the other three groups can do each turn, plus your victory conditions and how thats calculated are all different.
Thats also not counting how to play the AI bots.
Incredibly rewarding experience, but it's easily the toughest game I've had to learn.
Terra Mystica was a cake walk in comparison.
You people obviously haven't heard about The Republic of Rome.
It's quite heavy to keep all the rules in your head at one time.
Other than that, there's Magic Realm which has a nicely formatted, fan made rulebook that is 270 or so pages.
My friends can turn Carcassonne into an ordeal to learn if he's teaching.
Otherwise, the game I never bought even though I love playing it: 7 Wonders.
Just such a long explanation of a lot of cards with no way for someone to get it without playing a bunch of hands.
Very long in comparison to its length.
And, even for people who've played 18xx games before: 1862.
There are a lot of new rules, a new way to start companies and three different trains types.

Actually Twilight Imperium's rules are written really really well.
The instruction booklet builds off itself in a really straight forward way and there are some good player written summaries on Boardgamegeek.
We had a pretty pain free time with this with some members that usually struggle with new rule sets.
Agree, TI is really deep, but very elegant and a lot less intimidating than it seems.
Pretty much, after you've read the instructions, it will be much easier most difficult board game teach the game to someone new than it is to read and learn it the first time.
I just played for the first time this past week and it wasn't as intimidating as it appears.
The rules are well done and all the mechanisms and the flow of the game make sense.
It is very deep but not very complex.
All of these pale in comparison to just about any Phil Eklund game.
High Frontier is so worth it to learn though.
That being said - yeah mage knight can be a bear.
Virgin Queen with over 80 pages in rules and scenarios.
Hands down the most difficult game I've ever had to learn, then teach to a group of people.
The rules even give you a script to follow to teach others how to play.
My guess is that there are a couple war games out there that make Twilight Struggle and Terra Mystica look like Tic-Tac-Toe.
Fire in the Lake is tough because while the game itself is rather balanced, it's an asymmetric game; I'm not talking unique like in Terra Mystica where it's just their special powers, I'm talking "each action you can do a online games game monopoly free play board is different than what the other three groups can do each turn, plus your victory conditions and how thats calculated are all different.
Thats also not counting how to play the All board game review bots.
Incredibly rewarding experience, but it's easily the toughest game I've had to learn.
Terra Mystica was a cake walk in comparison.
You people obviously haven't heard about The Republic of Rome.
It's quite heavy to keep all the rules in your head at one time.
Other than that, there's Magic Realm which has a nicely formatted, fan made rulebook that is 270 or so pages.
My friends can turn Here into an ordeal to learn if he's teaching.
Otherwise, the game I never bought even though I love playing it: 7 Wonders.
Just such a long explanation of a lot of cards with no way for someone to get it without playing a bunch of hands.
Very long in comparison to its length.
There are a lot of new rules, a new way to start companies and three different trains types.
Great game though but not for the most difficult board game of heart.
I found I cannot teach that while playing another game which is what was happening while we crowded a games cafe : : : Pretty hard to imagine Carcassone being difficult to teach.
Place a tile on a legal spot visuals make it easy to see which tiles fitplace worker on tile, win points.
Assuming no expansions to clog it up.
Sure there's complexity beyond that, but turn-by-turn mechanics are dead simple and first game or two of almost anything are a learning experience anyway.
I do expect to run into some difficulties myself if I ever get into heavier games though.
Though, I'm sure, if he were to teach it he would do as he always does unless I warn him I'll veto his game : read the rules, not play even one practice solo round and then try and explain the rules.
He'd surely confuse people with the farmer rules and then, when explaining how to place anything else, he'll provide three or more extra superfluous examples each instead of just stating a succinct, condensed, rule.
Thus making it seem like each type of placement is much more complicated than it is.
I've had a consistently great experience using the tutorial missions in the rulebook.
They start off pretty easy and introduce just enough new concepts each mission that it's not overwhelming.
I've also found it works okay to start with real missions if there is only one new player.
Just watching one playthrough and resolution with some explanation is enough to catch on.
In the same vein, Space Cadets.
