Hello all, we are working on a new game in which each turn we need to determine weather conditions and market changes.
We are thinking to have spinner dials affixed to the board which could be spun each turn rather than using custom-faced dice, it seems much quicker, and would look awesome as part of the design.
What is the community's thoughts on spinners?
Are they considered as highly as dice?
It always seems people go goo-goo for custom dice, but spinners may seem a bit "basic" - please let me know your thoughts, and furthermore if you know of any good examples of spinners being used in higher-end games Thanks!
If you use a spinner you have to use the Price is Right ruling that the spinner must make at least 1 full revolution.
Spinners give me the feel that you are in a bit more control over the result rather than dice.
Bad thing about spinners is it requires everyone to move to the spinner.
Dice can be passed around.
Perhaps you might incorporate a spinner that can be passed around.
I have far more games with dice than spinners and truth be told prefer dice to spinners as they feel more random.
Custom dice are even better.
I think could be cool if the spinners were incorporated into a game as a dexterity test of sorts.
Spinners can give the perception of a component that will have more wear and tear than dice or take too long to come to a stop.
Spinners might be seen as childish.
Nuclear War has a spinner.
It's not a serious game, and the amount of text on the spinner cannot be put on a die.

I can't say I've seen many spinners recently I know I saw please click for source on an older version of Nuclear War, for examplebut one big issue is the arguments when the spinner inevitably lands along a line, making it difficult to determine which slice the pointer belongs to.
The spinner in the Game of Life works because of the tines of the wheel forcing the pointer to go into one well or another.
I'd prefer dice or some other deterministic device.
Spinners can give the perception of a component that will have more wear and tear than dice or take too long to come to a stop.
Spinners might be seen as childish.
Nuclear War has a spinner.
It's not a serious game, and the amount of text on the spinner cannot be put on a die.
I dislike Nuclear War's spinner and have replaced mine with two d10s.
An example of a spinner in a high-end game is the weather spinner in the for.
Sadly, in this case the spinner does not work well at all as it's much too "sticky" and barely spins.
We use a die instead otherwise it's a neat idea.
So spinners are fine, but if you incorporate them PLEASE make sure they will spin properly.
This is the one thing that the Game of Life got right!
I think a spinner does have the potential of looking cooler but I'm just not sure what that would take.
I guess I'm ok with the premise but I have yet to see a good spinner.
Life I guess has the best as its a full plastic wheel.
When its a spinner through a board I just feel like they could make soft spots and not spin as well as they should or other related physical impediments.
The constant flicking I image would show on the board too.
Spinners take longer and have the problem of stopping on the line between two values.
Use them only if you need a range of values or options that you can't achieve with dice.
It seems that most people have thus far said that custom dice aren't necessarily a good selling point certainly for the type of game you seem to be describing at leastbut also that spinners are a major detractor.
As noted, they just don't hold up over time and they convey a certain childishness.
But custom dice are expensive and have limited real estate for information on the face, and you'd need one for each variable.
But you look the aesthetic of having a wheel with a weather vane.
So how about a hybrid?
A rondel as an indicator using one or more dice as a randomizer?
If you take the time to figure out your highest common multiplier you could limit yourself to ONE die in total.
For arbitrary examples: Weather has 4 options - rain, snow, clear, fog Market has 3 options - up, down, steady Fashion interest has 6 options - classical, nostalgic, art deco, futuristic, post-modern, high Provide 1 twelve sided die, and when you draw your circle with the pie slices, indicate on each one what a roll means.
Roll for weather: 1-3 means rain, 4-6 means snow, 7-9 means clear, 10-12 means fog Set the "weather" vane to the appropriate one Roll for market: 1-4 means up, 5-8 means down, 9-12 means steady Etc.
A few benefits: 1.
You can make your weather vanes physically tight against the board instead of spinners.
So if someone bumps the table it doesn't reset during the turn by mistake.
You can adjust the values to make some things more likely by default without having to change the size of its part in the pie.
Let's say you are making a game about London, you can make 1-5 rain, 6 means snow, 7 means clear, 8-12 means fog.
Let's say you do an expansion and now you're in Madrid?
Set up different weather defaults.
You can have in game effects adjust the probability.
I will take the contrary view and say that there are definitely advantages to spinners.
The biggest: you can distribute your results asymmetrically with much finer granularity than with d6 dice.
For example, since you mentioned weather.
Say there are three regions of the board, "south", "middle", and "north".
Say the weather events are "blizzard", "cold", "mild", "hot", and "hurricane".
The "cold" and "blizzard" slices of the spinner for the north can be much bigger than for the south, and similarly the hurricane could be bigger for the south -- or bigger still for coastal regions in the south.
You can allow for the possibility of rare events that have different likelihoods in different areas of the board.
A blizzard in the south is extremely unlikely -- but with a spinner it can be a theoretical possibility.
It's not nearly as easy to do that with d6 dice.
Spinning a spinner for each region is really not any more effort than rolling a die for each region.
Really, it's mostly just a question of what fits your game's theme best.
Spinners have the ambiguity problem, of players arguing about what discreet value is represented.
But in some cases this may be a strength.
If you are making a miniatures sailing game that involves measuring distances with a compass or ruler, then using a spinner for the wind direction seems like it would be the right approach.
I haven't tried that M+M expansion.
It is no more ambiguous than the other dice spinner bonus sans depot decisions being made, and some gamers like the more freeform approach.
I don't like spinners.
Because they very rarely work well.
Have them too tight, they don't spin well.
Have them too loose, you have to respin many times to get a good spin as it turns the game into a dexterity one as you try to not dice spinner bonus sans depot the spinner wobble and stop abruptly.
Then ambiguities when it stops straight between two regions.
And then, the good spinners out there take forever to stop.
And then, the tactile feel dice spinner bonus sans depot less fun than dice.
Unless maybe you go "roulette" where you throw a marble into a spinner.
I wonder however if a kind of spinner could be mechanically dice spinner bonus sans depot that could spin perfectly for you by the press of a button sping thingy perhaps and that would always land perfectly in the middle of a region could be done?
Or a simple peggle board where you throw the marble on top and have the ball lands in a spot on the bottom.
These are cool ideas if they were in flavor, like a roulette theme for a Vegas crime game.
I would suggest a stack of cards actually in your case.
You can include both market information and weather all on the same card.
Maybe you have seasonal decks?
Spring corn: 2g sugar: 5g wind: high direction: nor'easter You can have the first player just flip over a card and put it at the top of the board where everyone can easily glance at it.
You can even put flavor text on there if you like.
Spinners take longer and have the problem of stopping on the line between two values.
Use them only if you need a range of values or options that you can't achieve with dice.
There should be a ruling as far as landing on a line as well.

Well, two guesses, actually.
Guess 1: It is a slang expression for a shooter, or maybe more generally, for a craps player.
Guess 2: It refers to the unacceptable practice of sliding one or both dice so that they spin instead of tumbling.
If executed successfully, whatever face is set on top remains on top during the shot.
See for an example of this technique.
A Dice Spinner is a Dice Player who is trying to obtain the same RESULTS as a dice player who SETS the dice to roll their numbernumbers.

Said " CHUM " was a trained DICE" SWITCH " ARTIST, he could ALSO SPIN a given point if he wanted too.
Russian Louie was mostly instrested at the time roulette SPINS- he and the CHUM As the story goes broke into the MORGAN CITY, LA CASINO YES THEY HAD ONE BACK THEN and rigged the rouletter wheel to SPIN their way!
They would HAVE stayed but the janitor noticed "cracks in the transom FRESH PAINT JOB!
Louie was also interested in Poker Gameswhen he and his CHUM got to Vegas he dice spinner bonus sans depot his own invite to a Poker Game run by Casino Owners, after a few hands he stood up with Gun in hand and said "I WIN EVERY THING" I would ask said CHUM for more stories about Louie -TOO MUCH GUTS!

I don't think the issue was ever resolved.
My own opinion is that dice spinning, as in my Guess 2 above, is not cheating; rather it is a form of advantage play.
Of course casinos recognize it as such and disallow its use.

Trained spinners are 95% effective!
Russian Louie's CHUM A native American by way of Mexico demonstrated this feat to me.

A few benefits: click here />You can make your weather vanes physically tight against the board instead of spinners.
If you are making a miniatures sailing game that involves measuring distances with a compass or ruler, then using please click for source spinner for the wind direction seems like it would be the right approach.
I haven't tried that M+M expansion.
It is no more ambiguous than the other design decisions being made, and some gamers like the more freeform approach.
I don't like spinners.
Because they very rarely work well.
Have them too tight, they don't spin well.
Have them too loose, you have to respin many times to get a good spin as it turns the game into a dexterity one as you try to not have the spinner wobble and stop abruptly.
Then ambiguities when it stops straight between two regions.
And then, the good spinners out there take forever to stop.
And then, the tactile feel is dice spinner bonus sans depot fun than dice.
Unless maybe you go "roulette" where you throw a marble into a spinner.
I wonder however if a kind of spinner could be mechanically done that could spin perfectly for you by the press of a button sping thingy perhaps and that would always land perfectly in the middle of a region could be done?
