When you get close, take the two nuts apart (separate your nuts, haha) and put the new one back into the slot and use the nut files to file the slots down to the proper height. The best way is to put it in the slot and tighten one or two strings to hold it in place.

I have been buying nut blanks with the vintage Fender fretboard curvature. File the nut slot depth slowly, using automotive feeler gauges to make sure the string clearance at the first fret equals the clearance at the second when you fret at the first, like a zeroth fret would do.

1) replace nut 2) shim nut on bass side 3) fill slot with glue/ baking soda I personally think shimming the nut is the easiest solution. Remove the nut, stick a thin piece of card stock under the bass side only, any you are done.

I need to re-nut my PRS and I want a rounded bottom on the nut slots so the tremolo will stay in tune better. Question #1 I'm wondering what some of you guys know about nut files available right now. I want high quality files that leave a very nice rounded bottom to the nut slot. I've looked at LMII, stew mac and warmoth. Question #2

Precisely graduated nut files are expensive. I like the ones made by Grobet in Switzerland - no more expensive than Stew Mac's files, but I think they last longer. The nut adjustment is one of the most important (and most misunderstood) adjustments on the guitar. The width, depth, and angle of the slot needs to be cut with skill and precision.

You need a vertical straight slot, not one that wanders about from side to side. The Hiroshima/Ibanez double-edge nut files have a Vee cut and make a rounded bottom to the slot, which is what you want to finish the nut. I find them easier to control.

In article source, I think they work; some might argue that you get what you pay for, but in my case it's sumthin versus nuthin.
The kit of tip cleaners is really only a little bigger than a matchbox, so most of the pictures of them are misleading.
The smallest "file" is apparently.
These things are little more than wire with rings cut into them that function just click for source the tooth of the file.
Someone in another thread mentioned that they are very flexible and that's pretty accurate.
I used the range of the seven smallest tip cleaners to do the six slots, in each case choosing by eyeball the smallest one that was larger than the string itself for a set of Daddario half round 010s.
The guitar is a MIM Strat with the original nut.
I slanted the files toward the tuners at about half the angle of the strings and started sawing, with the strings pulled aside fredensborg slot at a time.
I basically just plucked the string every few saws, bass nut slot files and then checked the tuning at the first fret.
My very scientific method was to cut as deep as I dared or until it was in tune at the first fret, whichever came first.
It seemed to work ok, and I did not cut any of the slots below the first fret level whew.
I dealt with the floppy wire by either holding it with one hand on each end or by putting pressure on it the opposite of the bow, and I guess it worked well enough for me.
In the end, I had a guitar nut in which the strings had a much better fit, repairing the ineffective butcher job I had done earlier with a combination of a pretty thin file and razor saw.
Tuning became much easier because the strings were not jammed into the nut slots.
Open chords are also now better in tune, although up the fretboard went out of tune- apparently the change in slot height was enough to mess up the intonation, so I need to fix that when I get a chance, hopefully soon.
Overall, I would recommend giving these a try, but the more you spend for them, the more the return is diminished as you get closer to the cost of real files.
I have no commercial interest in these things.
Thanks for the review, sounds like they worked for you.
Should have them next week.
My experience was not a great one.
I slotted a graphite nut with a set of these purchased at home depot.
The tip cleaners barely made it and I doubt they would have work for another one.
They are far too flimsy and not sharp enough to work efficiently for a job like this.
The results were mediocre at best.
I've since invested in files from warmoth and regret the time and effort I put into attempting this.

I'd be interested to know how you did it.
Did you cut the slot first with a saw and use the tip cleaners to shape it, or did you use them to cut the slot?
I've used them now to deepen and shape the slots in three nuts and they're still working, but they might be duller than when I started.
I could see how they might dull quicker on a graphite nut than plastic.
However you did it, it sounds like the tip cleaners did the job, although with some frustration.
The flimsiness is a little bit of a problem but I can work around it, and I wouldn't call them "far too bass nut slot files they're not too flimsy to use, but I can also deepen a slot bass nut slot files an old round wound string if that's all I have.
I personally have a very limited guitar budget thought downtown deluxe free slots consider am always looking for a more cost effective way to get the job done, even if it is more labor intensive in this case I think it's only slightly more so and not absolutely the best way to do it.
There's no question that files will work better if you can afford them.

I used a set of assorted files also purchased at Home Depot to begin the slots and then finished them with the cleaners.
I was bass nut slot files the same boat as you but in https://festes.ru/slots/i-soldi-reali-slot.html end, I just did not see it as a viable alternative.
The amount of time it took was not practical.
Now I've accepted that this will be a life long hobby and I hope to keep my guitars for a long time.
With that in mind it was easier to bite the bullet and get some quality tools.
I can completely understand your point of view.
For the guitar in question, I think that I ended up using a precut graphtech nut I had laying around and those are another very reasonably priced option.
But, the nut slotting files are a must for an authentic bone nut.
Check out his website!
It eliminates "right tool for the right job" as a reason for blowing a nut.
I also think DiStefano's frettech website is almost a public service.
Same for Terry Down's wonderful contributions.
I can almost see myself doing my own nut filing and finishing.
Caveat: I could never be judged as even "fair" with my hands.
I have used little round files of this type and found they do not cut straight down, despite having used a 0.
Also they do cut a parallel sided slot, not a Vee shape.
I thought they worked quite well.
And then I got some pukka nut files.
Oh, boy what a difference.
They do the job right first time.
Opinions do differ on this one, and I've no wish to bass nut slot files anyone.
I realize it's "old," but it deserves to be bumped up.
I replaced a nut in an Epi Dot with a slotted tusq XL mit teflonand this morning's project was to achieve the perfect set-up.
Tune-o-matic-ed till the intonation was fine at the 12th fret, but found it was off at the 5th and got worse closer to the nut.
After cursing the Chinese, a little Googling showed it is likely the nut slot depth on the nut I installed.
Damned DIY American craftsmanship!
UPDATE: Perhaps it's the teflon nut, or perhaps the cheap Chinese Home Depot Lincoln Electric tip cleaners are sub-par which wouldn't surprise mebut I found this to be the most time consuming and frustrating experiment I've tried in quite a while.
MIND YOU: THIS WAS A PRE-SLOTTED SYNTHETIC NUT!
I can't imagine trying this with a blank, or god-forbid bone.
For the A string, I went cowboy and heated the tip cleaner on the stove - this worked better!
Luckily, I lamented to a friend this morning who said "Oh, I have a bunch of those nut files!
I'm actually worried about cutting too fast now - something I couldn't have imagined last night.
I saw in another thread where a guy cut teeth into his feeler gauges, and the friend who loaned me the files said he actually had shaved down hacksaw blades before he ponied up the bucks.
But as much as I hate to admit it, this may be a "right tool for the job" situation.
I used WYPO torch tip cleaners to cut nut slots before I bought a real set of nut files.
After finishing bass nut slot files the torch tip cleaners 1-2 hours my fingers would be very sore.
Now that I have nut files, I can cut a nut in 5-10 minutes, and experience no hand pain.
To igre bez depozita slot of you who can cut a decent nut with torch tip cleaners, my hat's off to you.
I've tried it, and it's just no fun at all.
To me, files are the only way to go.
I'd never want to slot a nut with them but they are OK for setup work for deepening slots.
You do need to use a caliper with them to bass nut slot files the string diameter.
I think I got my nut files from Warmoth for not too much money.
One of my hobbies is tool making and I have found that very often you don't get anywhere near what you pay for.
Snip the welder tip cleaners off with side cutters and clamp them in the saw.
There are also Spiral saw blades of specific diameters available for these saws, but they can wander so use them only for the profile and not to remove a lot of material.
